what do school kids and software engineers and managers all need alike?

Travel Log: Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Dead Sea

310 miles of my recent road-trip in the heart of Israel is a definite experience of charm, antiquity and excitement.

  • Tel Aviv’s traffic, skyscrapers and sandy beaches reminded me of Mumbai but the Jaffa old city stood out uniquely.
  • Floating like a cork ball in the Dead Sea gave me an unbelievable experience of buoyancy apart from burning my eyes and nose.
  • Jerusalem and its ancient remains inside the walls of the old city
  • the surreal religious fervor at the Stone of Anointment in the church of Holy Sepulcher
  • the Semitic orthodox doctrines and rituals, the Mezuzahs and the Golden Menorah
  • the hummus, khuskhus, polanta and other typical vegetarian food  & the kosher restrictions in the kitchens
  • the Ferrari museum
  • the Dead-Sea scrolls in the Israel Museum
  • the Nano-Bible
  • Masada ruins and Qumran caves (I couldn’t locate them by road and didn’t get a chance to go back again)
  • and more than all, the warm welcome and cordiality of colleagues and citizens alike

… Its a long list 🙂

great words from a great cook

Listening to the famous Chef Thomas Keller yesterday in the campus was so inspiring. Wanna know what lead him from a dishwasher to SEVEN grand Michelin Stars? #goosebumps

organization; efficiency; critical feedback; repetition; rituals; team work;

It was a certain feast for me when he explained each of these that gives me little more clarity in grasping where men fail whatever their field of work is, how teams flounder however ambitious their goals are, and in fact why success dates only a few.

OneNote vs EverNote — How Microsoft wins it hands down inspite of gray areas

I am a big fan of Evernote and used it extensively till today. I have more than 100 ‘notes’ in Evernote that keep me going.. Another 10 notes for quick scribbling in SimpleNote. But Microsoft’s OneNote has changed the game completely. I am super impressed with all the features and flexibility in OneNote and I am switching to it this weekend. SimpleNote is good too but its nowhere in the game as they work with only text and they have insurmountable issues with multi-device sync.

Hope my comparison in detail below helps you make the switch too 🙂 and wish the Microsoft works it out in the gray areas 🙂 o yes they are not perfect.
Please feel free to add/comment/counter if you have something to say.

OneNote Evernote
❤ You can type anywhere.. Wow.. Its an unending canvas. Really. 🙄
❤ Whatever you type is a ‘block’ that can be moved anywhere.. Wowow. 🙄
❤ Share the notes with anyone so you can collaborate together. .Free. 🙄 This is a pro feature so you have to shed $$
❤ Sections and Pages give you two dimensional flexibility and two layers of categorization. 🙄 Only ‘notes’ that are of course endless but you can’t further classify/seggregate them.
❤ Adding tags/margins to text is superb with lotta options. ‘To Do’ items are never organized so efficiently with dynamic checkboxes etc. 🙄 Only Tagging available but not superly organized.
❤ IFTTT and many other apps integrated. So when I wake up everyday, I can instantly see my sleep patterns in my notes. Its into GDOC till today, but notes are where I live all the time. 😐 Not many but I see IFTTT too now.
😐 ‘Versioning’ not available‘Versions’ available in web app but not yet in native MAC app ( only SimpleNote does it ) 🙄 ‘Versions’ not available ( only SimpleNote does it )
You can now ’email’ a note  and it appears in the default section. please confirm (Yes! available in Evernote too)
Sync with other devices (Android,Mac,Amazon). O yes. We can. But only Mac.I see it now on Android and Windows too.
🙄 ❤ ‘shortcuts’ to recently visited notes
🙄 No ‘custom tags’, No import feature ❤ Available.
👿 Telugu fonts are completely screwed up. Still figuring out. ❤ Evernote is much better.

thanks for coming here,

How I improved my ‘deep sleep’ hours

Sleep is a true privilege.. you can’t buy it.. you can’t snatch it.. Neither your social status, nor your hidden dollar stash, none of your cool gadgets, nor your costly cot… no my friend.. none of them can make you sleep well..

If you have not yet seriously observed your sleep patterns, then you better start doing it. Because the quantity and quality of your sleep directly impacts your health, your cognitive skills, reflexes and reactions, way of thinking, social behaviour and finally even the number of chess games you win. 🙂

You can read about REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and how sleep is categorized into light and deep phases, there are innumerable reports out there.. And you would need a health tracker device something like a ‘Jawbone UP band’ or a ‘Fibit flex’ or a ‘Nike+ FuelBand SE’ etc.. Trust me! Its worth money. Compare them and buy one that suits you… and there are some smartphone apps too that do a similar job.. check em out but how to improve your deep sleep? haha… thats the secret i am going to tell you now, but mind you! Its very tough to do all this:

Timely food and sleep

aah! you can’t do that? ok next..

Healthy diet

I too swing too much, but for most of the week, I am on a balanced diet, with really a lot of vegetables, leaves and just a few carbs that are barely enough. Ensure you are served with more uncooked raw food. I found ‘1:3’ as the best ratio for cooked vs uncooked portions. And yes unfortunately, ‘NO SWEETS’ please…not at all. Start doing this in your lunch.. Ensure you dine very light so as not to stress your tummy too much..

Quantity of sleep

Yes, the number of hours matters. Observe it carefully, its the sleep time that we abuse most and usually cut it short for our unplanned events by sacrificing a few hours sleep on that day.. Its bad. There is no catching up later. It won’t work that way. I was sleeping 6 to 6.5 hours a day with 2 hr deep sleep, but one good samaritan has told me the ‘8-8-8’ rule.. 8 hours work, 8  hours of play and 8 hours of sleep… It would be fantastic if we can truly do that, but I am afraid I personally cannot.. So I pegged my sleep goal at 8 hours, but ensured sleeping at least 7dot5 hr a day…I planned the rest of the day in a way that gives importance to these most abused 8 hours of sleep time..  Few weeks like that and I can see the ‘deep sleep’ part actually increasing from 2 to 3 and then to 4.. and haa to 5.

Exercise

I think we have outgrown the old adage of ‘What food to the hungry and what bed to the sleepy’.. No! Mere exercise won’t give you deep sleep, while it surely can make you sleep more. So, its mandatory you have a moderate to strenuous exercise routine but you still have to follow the rest of the rules in here..

Forgive and move on

This is another important thing you have to do.. Stop comparing yourself with others. Stop feeling insecure. Forgive them who did bad things to you. And move on. Forgive the bus driver who spoiled your day. Forgive the autowallah that almost pushed you into the gutter. Forgive the lady next door for all her stupidities.  Life is bigger than the petty things you fight with every day. No one is eligible enough to give you a nightmare.

Divert the mind before you hit the bed

Keep your mind occupied all through the day. Don’t just watch TV or work for the office all day long but develop some habits that keep you happy and your mind occupied. And just before hitting the bed, divert your mind, like I play chess for 20 mins that helps in forgetting everything else before I go to sleep. Though I wake up suddenly when I defeat Grand Masters Anatoly or Anand in a dream, overall, it helps me go to bed with less nagging thoughts inside..

Dark room, Silence and Family

Make sure the bedroom is dimly lit or better if its completely dark with a handy switch or torch.  And yes! you need a silent night to have a good sleep. And finally! If you have infant kids sleeping on the same cot, the device might detect their movements and your graphs would come down. But most of us are used to having a kid in the arm and I can sense the same freshness of deep sleep even though its not reported by the device. If the kid wakes you up, then its just a bad night.  Otherwise, it seemed fine to me. Am still researching this part.

Its all guys! Thats how I keep clocking a 4-5 hour deep sleep every day.. 🙂 And my weight is coming down too from 96 to sub 90’s.. Thats my next milestone 🙂 Keep watching this space.

Hope this helps you…Thanks for reading,
/balu

Update-1:

I clocked a 78% deep sleep today (20130105) — its not a random shot — improving my deep sleep percentage from 40’s to almost 80’s 🙂 I can’t explain how supremely refreshing the feeling is 🙂

Jawbone doesn’t give in-depth analysis as below, neither it makes the input data available for off-app analytics… so I spend few seconds extra every day to keep my sleep data in an excel sheet and this is how it looks like over the last 3 months 🙂 .. hope this helps you or perhaps inspire too  🙂

my suggestion implemented :: numbered exit routes

so, did you understand why they are numbered?

so, did you understand why they are numbered?

I was, am and always will be an ERT member. Perhaps because I have seen enough of fire and water and so knew the value of life. I find people almost always mocking a false alarm and growl about the sorry announcement.  Fire Drills are never taken seriously and people walk with a certain sense of unwillingness when asked to move out during the prep drill.  All this when we continuously see/hear/read of fire accidents in one or the other place all the time.. huh!
Anyway, I had suggested (sometime back) to number the exit routes, which was quickly put into action by the concerned authorities. I felt so happy.. Thought of sharing this with you all.. Who knows? It can come handy and save someone..

BTW, we have 4 exit routes in our 5-storeyed, glass-walled building with ~26 steps between each floor. Two of those routes open up at the perimeter of the building and so are a bit safer if you too are a paranoid like me.  We have 3 types of fire extinguishers, 8 in each floor. We have fire alarms, sensors and water pipes everywhere. We also have an enormous water hose that can reach the top of the building, just in case if needed. We do at least one fire drill every year.

Am not saying this all to bore you to death.. Please go and check all these things in your workplace.. It helps.

thanks for reading,

balu

Kids @ Work

Yahoo! is a great place to work for 🙂 and kids@work is an annual event that really charges everyone around, turning the office floors momentarily into a simple play ground..There will be all sorts of activities for kids and they just love it. I am still collecting these pics from the day, but for now.. enjoy this one 🙂

Bans is looking cool with half-asleep eyes all due to the delicious curd rice 😉 but if you find me ugly, then you have to go jog some 5km with a 10kg bag on each shoulder and then stand before a mirror and look at yourself 😉 :p

Its ‘YOU’ – the most dangerous word in English

people have many thorns, antennas etc for the word 'YOU'

people have many thorns, antennas etc for the word 'YOU'

Its ‘YOU’ – the most dangerous word in English

I have not yet seen a more powerful word than the ‘you’ that I so would consider it the most dangerous too.  Exercise extreme caution while you are using it.

If used directly, this is the single most word that can have the maximum impact out of all other words you have spoken.  Whether it is to appreciate someone or just to repress one, whether to contain all the energies in the world or to wide open a Pandora’s Box, whether to aspire all of one’s virtues or to exacerbate a very indignity… this is the only word that makes the difference. in what you write. in whatever you talk. and in what all you listen to.

If used indirectly, like while generalizing something, people would almost certainly confuse it to be a direct reference to themselves. All in all, this is the word that alerts people, lets them pay more attention and allows them to have their own understanding of how/why you used it.  If you don’t understand what I am saying… if ‘YOU’ don’t understand what I am saying, then start watching and go live your own experience. But for now, heed me and:

Exercise extreme caution while you are using the word ‘YOU’. It makes a lot of difference possibly in many ways.

Behaviour by Definitions? OR is it the other way?

When ‘meetings’ become monologues where some boss gives down what his boss told him:
walk out of such meetings carelessly and let them know people should gather in conf rooms for a reason

When a ‘team’ becomes a bunch of sub-teams joining together for the sake of functionality with no binding to other sub-teams:
dishonour every such sub-team and let them know that all sub-teams and every individual are part of the team

When a ‘colleague’ becomes someone spying on you with daily reports to your boss:
um.. you can’t actually do anything here.. just don’t become one yourself and don’t forget to smile at him every time you meet 🙂
